View All Critic Reviews Nov 13, Based on a Japanese graphic novel and adapted by James Cameron, the story follows a cyborg who's rescued from a junk yard with no memory of who she was, but after she becomes a bounty hunter she starts getting pieces of her memory back; meanwhile Nova, the mysterious leader of the sky city Zalem takes an interest in this new cyborg after she demonstrates some long forgotten fighting techniques.

Rosa Salazar gives an impressive motion-capture performance as Alita, but there's an "uncanny valleyness" about the character design.

And the script is kind of a mess, as it's all over the place setting up multiple story threats several of which are never resolved.

Still, the action scenes are incredibly exciting and dynamic. The story takes place in the former United States. Figure's coastal hometown is Alhambra, California.

Battle Angel Alita is eventually revealed to take place in the 26th century. Battle Angel Alita features a diverse cast of characters, many of whom shift in and out of focus as the story progresses.

Some are never to be seen again following the conclusion of a story arc, while others make recurring appearances.

The one character who remains a constant throughout is Alita , the protagonist and title character, a young cyborg with amnesia struggling to uncover her forgotten past through the only thing she remembers from it: by fighting.

Early on in the story, Daisuke Ido , a bounty-hunting cybernetic doctor who finds and revives Alita, plays a major role as well, but midway the focus begins to increasingly shift to Desty Nova , an eccentric nanotechnology scientist who has fled from Zalem.

Desty Nova is the mastermind behind many of the enemies and trials that Alita faces, but does not make an actual appearance until more than two years into the story, although he is alluded to early on.

Finally, Kaos , Desty Nova's son, a frail and troubled radio DJ with psychometric powers, also begins to play a crucial role after he comes in contact with Alita.

He broadcasts his popular radio show from the wastelands outside the Scrapyard, staying away from the increasing conflict between Zalem and the rebel army Barjack.

Alita was originally a female cyborg police officer named Gally in an unpublished comic called Reimeika Rainmaker.

Publishers at Shueisha liked her and asked Kishiro to make a new story with her as the main character. After he had come up with the plot for a storyline he was commissioned to make it a long-running series.

Besides renaming Gally to Alita , older North American versions of the manga also changed the city of Zalem meaning oppressor in Arabic and Persian to Tiphares , after Tiferet.

Since Kishiro also used the name Jeru for the facility atop Zalem , Jeru was renamed Ketheres in the translation, after Keter.

More recent versions reverted the cities' names back to Zalem and Jeru. To further develop the Biblical theme in the original series, Zalem 's main computer was named Melchizedek , "the king of Salem" and "priest to the Most High God".

The manga was first published in Shueisha 's Business Jump magazine. Yukito Kishiro moved from Shueisha to Kodansha in August The company acquired the license rights to Battle Angel Alita.

It was released in a single volume on December 19, The series has been licensed by Kodansha USA, who published it digitally on October 30, and as hardcover on November 20, A 6-volume special edition titled Gunnm: Complete Edition was released in Japan on December 23, The series was released in B5 format and contains the original story.

A two-episode OVA was released in , incorporating elements from the second volume of the manga with changes to the characters and storyline.

According to Kishiro, only two episodes were originally planned. At the time, he was too busy with the manga "to review the plan coolly" and was not serious about an anime adaptation.

It remains the only anime adaptation of Battle Angel Alita to date and there are no plans to revive it. It showcases Alita in a Third League Motorball race with players from two of her races such as "Armor" Togo, Degchalev, and Valdicci, and depicts events from both of those races.

Director James Cameron acquired film rights to Battle Angel. So, the Motorball from books three and four, and parts of the story of one and two will all be in the movie.

Alita was originally scheduled to be his next production after the TV series Dark Angel , [26] which was influenced by Battle Angel Alita.

It is one of my favourite stories, a great story about a young woman's journey to self-discovery. It is a film that asks the question: What does it mean to be human?

Are you human if you have a heart, a brain or a soul? I look forward to giving the audience the film. In October , it was reported that Robert Rodriguez would direct the film with Cameron and Landau producing.

On December 8, , the first trailer for Battle Angel was released to the public, [35] and the film, titled Alita: Battle Angel and directed by Robert Rodriguez , came out in The novel was written by Pat Cadigan , a notable science fiction author.

Or perhaps they haven't even seen it yet. Without giving anything away: calling Alita out for having an unrealistically small waist and big eyes is like moaning that the terminator sets an unfair standard for men.

They're not human! Whilst I really enjoyed Alita, it could have, should have, been two films. There's so much going on that at times, some scenes can seem insignificant on reflection.

In the grand scope of the story some moving moments are lost. Some feel a little rushed. So overall, a good film.

Personally I loved it. Visually it's stunning. If you love sci-fi, if you liked Avatar or if you're a film lover, go see it!

Most films aren't worth it. It's made for 3D. Looking for some great streaming picks? Check out some of the IMDb editors' favorites movies and shows to round out your Watchlist.

Alita: Battle Angel is a visually stunning and entertaining film that reaches a little further than it can grasp.

Dann M Super Reviewer. Sep 03, We know the rule: no good live action films can come from anime and manga. THAT is nerd law.

But the funny thing is…they used to say the same about comic books and we know how that turned out. Hell, even video games have a couple of decent or at least passable movies of the week to enjoy.

As for anime itself, premium television may provide a more permanent answer, though we did get a mediocre but decent-looking picture with Ghost in the Shell.

What else would it take to make it over the line into that most coveted and most jealously guarded of territories? The one they call "Good?

Set in a post-apocalyptic future, a youthful looking cyborg is found by a kind doctor, reassembled, and taught the ropes of how the lower half lives, in the vast hellish slums under the shadow of a better world literally floating above them.

Does it work? Alita contains performances that are so damn good they almost seem out of place, considering how boilerplate the plot is.

It also moves at a decent pace, with uncharacteristically restrained direction from Robert Rodriguez, opting for an almost Spielbergian tone.

It's probably the best route to get general audiences invested into the material, as the fish-out-of-water, hero's journey was Hollywood's method of choice for decades.

Christoph Waltz is frakking great and his interactions with Alita are the heart of the movie. He is probably the only actor in Hollywood who could unironically say phrases like Panzer Kunst and sound authentic.

Of course, the main draw is obvious. Holy crap, this movie has more punch than its title suggests. Yes, some dialogue is clunky, but few of these scenes last too long.

There was a bit of controversy with the visuals, specifically Alita's face and her VERY large anime eyes.

Your mileage will vary on if it crosses the uncanny valley, but odds are it will not bother you as the story progresses. And the background graphics are gorgeous, no argument there.

Alita is let down by its villains to some degree and it does end on the promise of a continuing story, which is always a dicey prospect. Thankfully it's not a cliffhanger, and Alita: Battle Angel can stand on its own, regardless of future installments.

Is it great? Probably not, but it's damn good. Now let's see if Cowboy Bebop can take us to greatness, once again.

Joshua S Super Reviewer. Aug 03, The movie is overstuffed with characters and plot. Even worse is the clumsy exposition which doesn't really build the world so much as tease sequels.

Alec B Super Reviewer. Jul 08, One great looking film. And that's about it. That's everything in fact. Lump this one with all the other great looking films that ignore character, plot, story, arc, etc.

In point of fact, it seemed to me to be an all-too-common money grab of a movie, selling the explosions, setting up the sequel, and screwing the fans.
