She lived a very troubled and melancholy life, until she found a friend called Scot someone who stood up for her when she got bullied but later on in the book Scot gets bullied as well for helping Martha whenever the children at her school give her a hard time.
At first she didn't mind being bullied or cared about it however, because of scott she became more protective to herself and she cared about bullying even more.
You might be wondering why Martha got bullied it was because of what she wore and her introverted personality. Martha struggled to fit with the kids at her school because if her different uniform that was knitted by her mother.
Even the front cover without the title on it still hooks you and makes you really want to know what the meaning behind it is. How has Martha developed as a character?

Often chilling, yet ultimately uplifting. Totally convincing. Absolutely unmissable The Bookseller That I could see the end coming fairly early in the book did not diminish my reading pleasure.

One rule in her family is heavily enforced and if broke Abomination Review Plot: Abomination is about two kids, Martha and Scott.
One rule in her family is heavily enforced and if broken, may have dire consequences. If Martha chooses to ignore this rule, she may end up like her sister, Mary, who had been sent away for greatly disobeying the rules of the Righteous.
The rule is- Do not invite anyone home. Scott has just moved and is new to the school. One afternoon, Scott and Martha meet and actually get to know each other.
Over time, their friendship develops greatly. This novel made me want to continue reading But even though it kept me reading, it was not exactly what I thought it would be.
At first, I anticipated a thrilling story filled with horror. Though this was not what I was expecting, it was a very interesting story.
My overall rating: 4. Jan 06, Agent Aaliyah rated it it was amazing. Abomination is about a girl named martha who has to keep a very important secret about whats in her house.
This book was so powerful that i couldnt put it down. May 04, Sam H rated it it was amazing. This book starts as a book about a religious cult.
As the story unravels though you come to realise in essence this book is a simple love story. Martha who is 12 is different from other kids —no TV, no computer, no cool clothes, and especially no friends.
That is until she meets Scott a new boy to the school. Both characters are engaging and well written. This is my second Robert Swindells novel and I was not disappointed.
Abomination is in the cellar and cannot be revealed. As Scott and Martha become closer will Abomination be revealed?
The story charts the struggle Martha has. With both juggling her families rules with her blossoming friendship with Scott. Every page turn takes us closer to the conclusion.
This book is a real page turner I could not put down. The quick pace and intriguing plot makes it a must read for all ages.
Anyone who likes a thrilling read that keeps you guessing to the end must read Abomination. I will be picking up more from this author. Jul 25, Emily Weatherburn rated it it was amazing Shelves: readstars , ya.
I was the perfect age for these books about 13 or 14 and the stories seemed so intriguingly dark. In this one, Swindells follows the journey of a very unpopular schoolgirl who is often bullied for her strange clothes.
It quickly transpires that this is not the fault of the child, but the fault of the family, who lead some very strange lives.
As we soon discover, though, some of their behaviou Having read Swindells' Stone Cold in school, I decided to read Abomination, which I enjoyed even more!
As we soon discover, though, some of their behaviours are far more gruesome than some slight neglect when it comes to their daughter's wardrobe.
This book is incredibly well written and is the perfect book for young readers. As an adult reading a book that's been written for children, I have to try to rate it for the impact it would have had when I was much younger, and not how it makes me feel today.
Abomination is about two twelve-year-olds - Martha and Scott. Martha is an outsider, bullied and abused by the other kids at school because she wears 'odd' clothes that her mother makes for her.
Scott is the new kid who makes the dangerous mistake of siding with Martha against her abusers and is determined to force a f As an adult reading a book that's been written for children, I have to try to rate it for the impact it would have had when I was much younger, and not how it makes me feel today.
Scott is the new kid who makes the dangerous mistake of siding with Martha against her abusers and is determined to force a friendship with this strange girl, regardless that it sets him up to be an outsider too.
Martha's family belong to a religious group called the 'Righteous'. The family have a secret that means Martha can't bring friends home or tell anybody about Abomination in the basement.
It's a quick read that manages to touch on some important topics and to encourage children to speak out against abuse, bullying and coercive behaviour.
It reveals the redemptive power of friendship and gives a plug to organisations like Childline. I'm unsure when it was originally written but it's before the widespread use of mobile phones and the internet.
Nov 26, 05MonicaW rated it really liked it. I think this book was intended for young adults or even adults. The main issue in this book is a little girl named Martha grows up different then many other children and has a hard time making desicions not knowing right or wrong.
It takes place at Taylor Hill where her house and school are located. It's a little earlier in time around the 's maybe 90's around the time when people first started computers in their homes.
The main characters are Martha - girl who was a righteous, shes confused I think this book was intended for young adults or even adults.
The main characters are Martha - girl who was a righteous, shes confused, wears ugly clothing her mom gives her. Scott - Boy that befriends Martha and is very determined and caring.
Martha's Parents - both set in own ways, cruel, unkind. A boy named Scott moves in a new town. At his new school there is an odd girl who dresses funny and is made fun of all the time.
No one ever shared or asked to borrow something from her. One day he noticed her digging through her pencil pouch so he offered her his ruler.
From then on he started getting made fun of from lending his ruler. From there he made friends with Martha the strange girl.
Martha grew up in a different culture than everyone else it is called "Righteous". Shes not aloud to go on the internet, watch T.
The worst part of her day is feeding Abomination. As Scott becomes better friends with her he wants to try to help her. She had told him she has a sister named Mary who left years ago but still writes to her.
Martha has one secret she cant tell anyone and that is Abomination. One day Scott came to her house unexpectedly. He hear Abomination so Martha told him what is was.
The "Abomination" was Marys baby living in a cell for 6 years. Martha's parents found out that Martha had told Scott. Her parents packed up fast and said they were moving.
Scott started emailing asking for Mary her sister. Finally a response came back and Mary went to the house, grabbed her baby and Martha then escaped hoping for a better life.
I liked Scott's new love for Martha and his care for her. I didn't like how Martha saw Abomination and her thoughts of him.
This first quote shows what Scott was starting to feel for Martha " I think I love her. I mean, it was obvious I liked her a lot, but surely you don't think about somebody every minute of the day and night just because you like them.
It is my worst thing. It is definitely not for everyone. I think people who can handle more suspenseful things as well as a mystery would enjoy it.
But you also need to have an open mind that not everyone is the same and things like this happen and some people don't understand that it is even wrong.
This book is unique because it goes into a life of a girl who's religion and the way she lives is totally different then anything I've heard of.
You see different perspectives and beliefs. Also you don't know until the very end what Abomination is, this keeps you reading! Jan 05, Erin Pradeep rated it it was ok Shelves: not-good-enough.
Ok, If you read this book, you'll probably take this book in either two directions no, it isn't left and right : 1 Stereotypical OR 2 Awesome I took this novel as a stereotype.
Now, before you start throwing tomatoes at me, may I explain? Whenever I read a book which had a promising portrayal of Christians, it was either the "Christian" was abusive or just too overprotective and strict.
There isn Ok, If you read this book, you'll probably take this book in either two directions no, it isn't left and right : 1 Stereotypical OR 2 Awesome I took this novel as a stereotype.
There isn't one specific way of Christianity. There are multiple. A Christian family may be kind and caring but have some discipline will other families won't allowed books on certain subjects maybe even movies.
Yes, there are some families which take it too much and abuse their child into shape. This book has done an excellent job at the portrayal of that specific family type but I'm just really tired of that trope.
I never read a book which had Christians portrayed as a caring family, which leaves a trail of love and joy wherever they go.
Christianity is religion which spreads kindness to the world, the aim as other religions. It is a religion where love and happiness are embraced like a huge bear hug.
Where love isn't for just people you love, it's for your haters and enemies too. Now, I'm not saying this for you to change or anything but this is what I feel Christianity is like.
People really need to hype up this idea of a portrayal where a Christian and his family, maybe is kind. I also felt the characters weren't fleshed out enough.
They were two-dimensional to me, so very close to becoming human. So, you're probably thinking, if I disliked I, why did I give it two stars? Well because 1 It was Robert Swindells 2 The pace, writing and tense passages were awesome.
No, seriously, I had the biggest case of goose bumps and the creeps. Ok, my rant's ended. Now, plz stand in a straight line before throwing tomatoes.
Jul 29, Alex rated it really liked it Shelves: novels. I really love this book. It is gripping and suspenseful and intense without being overwhelmingly terrifying.
You could definitely read this with children who might generally avoid 'horror' writing and find they enjoy it.
The slow accumulation of information, drip fed to the audience through out the book, allows the author to keep building the tension right up until the crucial moment.
It is a fantastic model of suspense writing. Moreover, the two main characters are complete contrasts and yet bo I really love this book.
Moreover, the two main characters are complete contrasts and yet both fully realised, as is their relationship.
The themes of this book are quite intense. One of the main characters is bullied and ostracised for being different - her family is strictly religious.
This theme may be something being influenced by children themselves and so, whilst discussion of bullying would and should be an important part of discussing the text, it would need to be handled with appropriate consideration.
Another theme, and one even more difficult but important to discuss, is that of abuse. It happens to one of the main characters who, in turn, helps to abuse another character.
This only becomes clear over the course of the story and is part of what adds to the suspense. It can lead to some excellent debates amongst about the morality of her actions and whether fear is acceptable as a motivation for doing something terrible.
However, it could obviously be a difficult issue and an awareness of the children and their experiences would be needed. Er selbst ordnete Abomination dem Death- und Thrash-Metal zu.
